Zephaniah Chapter 1

Zephaniah 1:1 (NIV)

1 The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, during the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah:

Zephaniah 1:2 (NIV)

2 “I will sweep away everything from the face of the earth,” declares the Lord.

Zephaniah 1:3 (NIV)

3 “I will sweep away both men and animals; I will sweep away the birds of the air and the fish of the sea. The wicked will have only heaps of rubble when I cut off man from the face of the earth,” declares the Lord.

Zephaniah 1:4 (NIV)

4 “I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all who live in Jerusalem. I will cut off from this place every remnant of Baal, the names of the pagan and the idolatrous priests–

Zephaniah 1:5 (NIV)

5 those who bow down on the roofs to worship the starry host, those who bow down and swear by the Lord and who also swear by Molech,

Zephaniah 1:6 (NIV)

6 those who turn back from following the Lord and neither seek the Lord nor inquire of him.

Zephaniah 1:7 (NIV)

7 Be silent before the Sovereign Lord, for the day of the Lord is near. The Lord has prepared a sacrifice; he has consecrated those he has invited.

Zephaniah 1:8 (NIV)

8 On the day of the Lord’s sacrifice I will punish the princes and the king’s sons and all those clad in foreign clothes.

Zephaniah 1:9 (NIV)

9 On that day I will punish all who avoid stepping on the threshold, who fill the temple of their gods with violence and deceit.

Zephaniah 1:10 (NIV)

10 “On that day,” declares the Lord, “a cry will go up from the Fish Gate, wailing from the New Quarter, and a loud crash from the hills.

Zephaniah 1:11 (NIV)

11 Wail, you who live in the market district; all your merchants will be wiped out, all who trade with silver will be ruined.

Zephaniah 1:12 (NIV)

12 At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, ‘The Lord will do nothing, either good or bad.’

Zephaniah 1:13 (NIV)

13 Their wealth will be plundered, their houses demolished. They will build houses but not live in them; they will plant vineyards but not drink the wine.

Zephaniah 1:14 (NIV)

14 “The great day of the Lord is near– near and coming quickly. Listen! The cry on the day of the Lord will be bitter, the shouting of the warrior there.

Zephaniah 1:15 (NIV)

15 That day will be a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness,

Zephaniah 1:16 (NIV)

16 a day of trumpet and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the corner towers.

Zephaniah 1:17 (NIV)

17 I will bring distress on the people and they will walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the Lord. Their blood will be poured out like dust and their entrails like filth.

Zephaniah 1:18 (NIV)

18 Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lord’s wrath. In the fire of his jealousy the whole world will be consumed, for he will make a sudden end of all who live in the earth.”

Zephaniah Chapter 2

Zephaniah 2:1 (NIV)

1 Gather together, gather together, O shameful nation,

Zephaniah 2:2 (NIV)

2 before the appointed time arrives and that day sweeps on like chaff, before the fierce anger of the Lord comes upon you, before the day of the Lord’s wrath comes upon you.

Zephaniah 2:3 (NIV)

3 Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, you who do what he commands. Seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the Lord’s anger.

Zephaniah 2:4 (AMP)

4 For [hear the fate of the Philistines:] Gaza shall be forsaken and Ashkelon shall become a desolation; the people of Ashdod shall be driven out at noonday and Ekron shall be uprooted.

Zephaniah 2:5 (AMP)

5 Woe to the inhabitants of the seacoast, the nation of the Cherethites [in Philistia]! The word of the Lord is against you, O Canaan, land of the Philistines; I will destroy you until no inhabitant is left.

Zephaniah 2:6 (NIV)

6 The land by the sea, where the Kerethites dwell, will be a place for shepherds and sheep pens.

Zephaniah 2:7 (NIV)

7 It will belong to the remnant of the house of Judah; there they will find pasture. In the evening they will lie down in the houses of Ashkelon. The Lord their God will care for them; he will restore their fortunes.

Zephaniah 2:8 (NIV)

8 “I have heard the insults of Moab and the taunts of the Ammonites, who insulted my people and made threats against their land.

Zephaniah 2:9 (NIV)

9 Therefore, as surely as I live,” declares the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, “surely Moab will become like Sodom, the Ammonites like Gomorrah– a place of weeds and salt pits, a wasteland forever. The remnant of my people will plunder them; the survivors of my nation will inherit their land.”

Zephaniah 2:10 (NIV)

10 This is what they will get in return for their pride, for insulting and mocking the people of the Lord Almighty.

Zephaniah 2:11 (AMP)

11 The Lord will be terrible to them, for He will make lean and famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship Him, every one from his place, even all the isles and coastlands of the nations.

Zephaniah 2:12 (AMP)

12 You Ethiopians also, you shall be slain by My sword.

Zephaniah 2:13 (NIV)

13 He will stretch out his hand against the north and destroy Assyria, leaving Nineveh utterly desolate and dry as the desert.

Zephaniah 2:14 (NIV)

14 Flocks and herds will lie down there, creatures of every kind. The desert owl and the screech owl will roost on her columns. Their calls will echo through the windows, rubble will be in the doorways, the beams of cedar will be exposed.

Zephaniah 2:15 (NIV)

15 This is the carefree city that lived in safety. She said to herself, “I am, and there is none besides me.” What a ruin she has become, a lair for wild beasts! All who pass by her scoff and shake their fists.

Zephaniah Chapter 3

Zephaniah 3:1 (AMP)

1 Woe to her that is rebellious and polluted, the oppressing city [Jerusalem]!

Zephaniah 3:2 (AMP)

2 She did not listen to and heed the voice [of God]; she accepted no correction or instruction; she trusted not in the Lord [nor leaned on or was confident in Him, but was confident in her own wealth]; she drew not near to her God [but to the god of Baal or Molech].

Zephaniah 3:3 (AMP)

3 Her officials in the midst of her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones on the morrow, for nothing is left by morning.

Zephaniah 3:4 (AMP)

4 Her prophets are light [lacking truth, gravity, and steadiness] and men of treachery; her priests have profaned the sanctuary; [defrauding God and man by pretending their own word is God’s word] they have done violence to the law.

Zephaniah 3:5 (NIV)

5 The Lord within her is righteous; he does no wrong. Morning by morning he dispenses his justice, and every new day he does not fail, yet the unrighteous know no shame.

Zephaniah 3:6 (AMP)

6 I [the Lord] have cut off nations; their battlements and corner towers are desolate and in ruins. I laid their streets waste so that none passes over them; their cities are destroyed so that there is no man, there is no inhabitant.

Zephaniah 3:7 (NIV)

7 I said to the city, ‘Surely you will fear me and accept correction!’ Then her dwelling would not be cut off, nor all my punishments come upon her. But they were still eager to act corruptly in all they did.

Zephaniah 3:8 (NASB)

8 “Therefore wait for Me,” declares the Lord, “For the day when I rise up as a witness. Indeed, My decision is to gather nations, To assemble kingdoms, To pour out on them My indignation, All My burning anger; For all the earth will be devoured By the fire of My zeal.

Zephaniah 3:9 (AMP)

9 For then [changing their impure language] I will give to the people a clear and pure speech from pure lips, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve Him with one unanimous consent and one united shoulder [bearing the yoke of the Lord].

Zephaniah 3:10 (NASB)

10 “From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia My worshipers, My dispersed ones, Will bring My offerings.

Zephaniah 3:11 (NASB)

11 “In that day you will feel no shame Because of all your deeds By which you have rebelled against Me; For then I will remove from your midst Your proud, exulting ones, And you will never again be haughty On My holy mountain.

Zephaniah 3:12 (NIV)

12 But I will leave within you the meek and humble, who trust in the name of the Lord.

Zephaniah 3:13 (NASB)

13 “The remnant of Israel will do no wrong And tell no lies, Nor will a deceitful tongue Be found in their mouths; For they will feed and lie down With no one to make them tremble.”

Zephaniah 3:14 (NIV)

14 Sing, O Daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O Daughter of Jerusalem!

Zephaniah 3:15 (AMP)

15 [For then it will be that] the Lord has taken away the judgments against you; He has cast out your enemy. The King of Israel, even the Lord [Himself], is in the midst of you; [and after He has come to you] you shall not experience or fear evil any more.

Zephaniah 3:16 (NIV)

16 On that day they will say to Jerusalem, “Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands hang limp.

Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)

17 The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”

Zephaniah 3:18 (AMP)

18 I will gather those belonging to you [those Israelites in captivity] who yearn and grieve for the solemn assembly [and the festivals], on whom [their exile and inability to attend services at Jerusalem have brought derision and] the reproach of it is a burden.

Zephaniah 3:19 (AMP)

19 Behold, at that time I will deal with all those who afflict you; I will save the limping [ones] and gather the outcasts and will make them a praise and a name in every land of their shame.

Zephaniah 3:20 (AMP)

20 At that time I will bring you in; yes, at that time I will gather you, for I will make you a name and a praise among all the nations of the earth when I reverse your captivity before your eyes, says the Lord.
